Tax Season Time and Your Dog…

Ideas for keeping your dog busy while you work on your taxes!

For many of us, working from home has become the new norm, and adding tax headaches to that can be challenging for us and our dogs. Dogs are incredibly social creatures and thrive on interaction and mental stimulation. So, how can you keep your pup engaged? With a little creativity and planning, you can keep your dog entertained and content while you tackle tasks on your computer.

I love interactive toys and chews!! Invest in interactive toys that are designed to keep dogs mentally stimulated and entertained. Puzzle toys, treat-dispensing balls (although these can be loud as your dog bangs them around the home), and interactive feeders can provide engagement activities for your dog. Fill these toys with your dog’s favorite treats or kibble to keep them motivated and focused while you work. Not only will these toys keep your dog occupied, but they also encourage problem-solving skills and provide a fun challenge. You can also provide your dog with a frozen Kong stuffed with peanut butter or yogurt to help keep him or her busy for an extended period. Rotating toys and activities will keep your dog mentally stimulated and prevent boredom.

Keeping your dog close can help alleviate stress and anxiety for your dog. Set up a comfortable and safe space for your dog near your location. Whether it’s a cozy bed or a soft blanket, having a designated area will give your pup a sense of security and help him or her understand that it’s time to relax while you work. During non-work hours, spend some time teaching your dog to settle on cue and use highly valuable reinforcement. This will help your dog understand what you want him or her to do while you are working. Make sure to reinforce the cue while you are working, too!

Take a break for yourself and your dog! It is important for us to take “brain breaks” as well as get the blood flowing to our brain and body. Scheduling regular breaks throughout your workday to spend quality time with your dog will help you as well. Whether it’s a quick game of fetch or a short walk around the block, these breaks will give you and your dog the engagement and exercise you both need to stay happy and healthy.

Create enrichment activities that your dog will enjoy for a quick lunch or “I have to get away from the computer” breaks. It is fun to set up a mini agility course in your home or backyard to provide physical and mental stimulation for your dog. Use household items such as chairs, broomsticks, and cardboard boxes to create obstacles for your dog to navigate. Teach your dog to jump over hurdles, weave through poles, and crawl under objects. Not only will this activity keep your dog physically active, but it will also strengthen your bond as you work together to conquer the course.

Is there a type of music that helps you get through the day (or helps you focus for tax day) that you and your dog can enjoy? Consider playing calming music or leaving the TV on low volume to provide background noise for your dog. This can help drown out any distracting sounds and create a soothing environment for pup and you while you work.

Keeping your dog entertained whether you are in the middle of tax prep or your regular workday is essential for a dog’s physical and mental well-being. By incorporating these ideas into your daily routine, you can help your dog stay happy, healthy, and entertained while you focus on your tasks.
